Stone Staircase Projects

Melbourne

A stone staircase is one of the most architecturally significant stone installations in a home or commercial space. Stone steps, treads and landings bring a permanence and material quality to a staircase that timber and carpet cannot match. The gallery below shows stone staircase installations completed by Multiform Stone across Melbourne.

We fabricate and install stone stair treads, risers, landings and stringer cladding in natural stone and porcelain. Each component is measured to precise tolerances, cut in our Campbellfield factory and installed by our experienced team. We work on straight, L-shaped and floating staircase configurations in both residential and commercial settings.

Stone Staircase Components

Stair Treads

The tread is the horizontal surface you step on. Stone treads are typically fabricated in 20mm or 30mm thickness, with a nosing profile on the front edge. Multiform Stone fabricates treads to precise length, width and nosing specifications — each tread is individually templated for a flush fit, even on curved or irregular staircases.

  • 20mm or 30mm thickness (standard residential)
  • Nosing profiles: square, pencil round, bullnose, anti-slip groove
  • Oversized format — single-piece treads with no joins across the width
  • Suitable for open-riser and closed-riser staircase configurations

Stair Risers

Risers are the vertical panels between treads. Stone risers in a matching or contrasting material to the treads create a considered, finished look. Risers are typically 10-20mm thick and are bonded to the structural stair substrate.

Landings & Half-Landings

Stone landing slabs are fabricated as continuous pieces where possible, reducing grout lines and creating a seamless floor surface between flights. We fabricate landings to match tread material and finish for a unified staircase.

Stringer Cladding

The stringer is the side panel of the staircase. Stone stringer cladding — thin panels bonded to the visible side of the staircase structure — creates a fully stone-clad appearance. This is commonly specified in luxury residential projects and commercial lobbies.

Stone Materials for Staircases

Material selection for a staircase is driven by aesthetics, slip resistance, durability under foot traffic, and interior style. Multiform Stone works with the following materials for staircase applications:

Natural Stone

  • Marble — elegant, suited to formal interiors, requires sealing
  • Travertine — warm, earthy, honed finish reduces slip risk
  • Limestone — soft natural look, honed preferred for stairs
  • Bluestone — dark, durable, excellent slip resistance when honed
  • Granite — very hard, durable, suited to high-traffic commercial stairs
  • Sandstone — textured, natural, suited to outdoor stairs

Engineered & Porcelain

  • Porcelain — large-format, through-body colour, UV stable (outdoor rated)
  • Sintered stone — Neolith and Dekton rated for stair applications
  • Anti-slip finishes available on all porcelain and sintered stone products
  • Through-body colour means chips and chips do not show white
  • Consistent batching for multi-flight staircase uniformity

Slip resistance note: All stone staircase materials can be finished with anti-slip profiles, grooves or surface textures. Honed natural stone has a lower slip risk than polished. We will advise on the appropriate finish for your staircase application and can specify materials that meet Australian slip resistance standards (AS 4586).

Frequently Asked Questions

Stone Staircases

Marble and travertine are the most popular choices for residential indoor stairs in Melbourne, particularly in formal and luxury-contemporary homes. For high-traffic areas such as commercial lobbies, granite and porcelain are preferred for their hardness and durability. Bluestone is a popular choice for homes with an industrial or moody aesthetic.

Polished stone can have a higher slip risk, particularly when wet. For stairs we typically recommend a honed finish on natural stone, or an anti-slip grooved profile on the tread nosing. Porcelain and sintered stone products are available with textured, anti-slip finishes rated to Australian standards. We will advise on the appropriate finish for your specific application.

In many cases, yes. Stone stair treads can be bonded over a structurally sound timber staircase substrate. We assess the existing structure as part of the templating process. If additional structural support is required, we will advise prior to proceeding.

Each tread is individually templated using digital measuring tools to capture exact dimensions. No two treads in a staircase are identical — minor variations in the substrate mean each piece must be cut to its specific measurements. Multiform Stone’s Campbellfield factory uses CNC equipment for precise cuts on every component.

Yes. Multiform Stone installs stone staircases in commercial buildings including apartment lobby stairs, retail spaces, office fitouts and hospitality venues. We work with architects, builders and project managers on commercial timelines and can provide AS 4586 slip resistance compliance documentation for commercial applications.
