Stone Fireplaces, Feature Walls & Living Areas

Melbourne

Stone transforms a living space. A well-crafted stone fireplace surround, a book-matched marble feature wall or a custom stone bar benchtop changes the character of a room in a way that paint, timber and tile cannot. The gallery below shows living area stonework completed by Multiform Stone across Melbourne residential homes.

We fabricate and install stone for every element of the living area — fireplace surrounds and hearths, entertainment unit surrounds, bar and drinks station benchtops, feature wall panels and console tops. All work is measured, fabricated in our Campbellfield factory and installed by our own team.

Stone Fireplace Surrounds & Hearths

A stone fireplace surround is one of the most enduring design choices you can make in a living room. Stone is fire-safe, does not discolour over time and improves with age. We fabricate fireplace surrounds and hearths to suit gas log fires, wood-burning fireplaces and decorative fireboxes.

  • Fireplace surrounds: side panels, top shelf/mantel and return
  • Hearths: floor-level stone slab in front of firebox opening
  • Feature backing panels: stone behind the firebox glass
  • Materials: marble, travertine, limestone, granite, bluestone, porcelain
  • Custom sizing to match your firebox opening and room proportions

Popular Stone Types for Fireplaces

Different stones suit different fire styles and interior aesthetics:

  • Limestone: soft, natural look — popular in Hamptons and Scandinavian-inspired interiors
  • Bluestone: dark, dramatic — suits industrial, contemporary and moody interiors
  • Granite: durable and varied — suits traditional and country-style homes
  • Porcelain: consistent large-format slabs — suited to minimalist and modern designs

Stone Feature Walls

Stone feature walls are one of the most requested living area finishes in Melbourne renovations and new builds. A floor-to-ceiling stone panel or book-matched slab wall creates an architectural focal point that requires no additional art or decoration.

  • Behind-TV feature walls in stone slab
  • Book-matched marble panels — mirror-image veining from consecutive slabs
  • Full-height stone cladding behind fireplaces
  • Entry hall and corridor feature walls
  • Porcelain panels for large, seamless applications

Book matching: consecutive slabs from the same block are cut and opened like a book so the veining mirrors across the join. This effect is only possible when slabs are selected and sequenced in our factory — it cannot be achieved from pre-cut tiles.

Bar Benchtops & Entertainment Areas

Home bars, drinks stations and entertainment units with stone tops are a popular feature of Melbourne renovation projects. We fabricate bar benchtops in the same range of materials as kitchen benchtops — waterfall ends, overhangs for bar stools and integrated sink cutouts can all be accommodated.

  • Bar and drinks station benchtops in stone or porcelain
  • Waterfall ends for exposed sides
  • Overhang detailing for bar stool seating
  • Integrated sink or basin cutout
  • Matching back panels or splashbacks

Frequently Asked Questions

Stone Fireplaces & Living Areas

Marble, limestone and travertine are the most popular choices for Melbourne fireplace surrounds. All are heat-safe when installed at the correct distance from the firebox. Granite is the most heat-resistant option and suits traditional and country-style homes. Porcelain is ideal for contemporary, minimalist designs where a seamless, large-format look is preferred.

Yes. Natural stone is non-combustible and fire-safe. Stone fireplace surrounds and hearths are installed using heat-resistant adhesives and grouts. We recommend maintaining manufacturer-specified clearances between the stone and the firebox opening, which we account for in our templating process.

Book matching requires selecting consecutive slabs from the same block at the time of purchase. At Multiform Stone’s Campbellfield factory, we can lay out multiple slabs side by side so you can see exactly how they will look when installed. This is why viewing slabs in person before ordering is important for book-match applications.

In some cases, yes — if the original slab batch is still available from our supplier. Bring the name of your existing stone and we will check availability. If the batch is exhausted, we can help you find a complementary material that works with your existing stone.

For a standard kitchen, installation typically takes one day. Templating (measuring) is done 1-2 weeks before installation. Total lead time from template to installation is typically 2-3 weeks, depending on material availability.
